Domain NameDomain Name Registration is the process of leasing a domain name for a set number of years. A domain name is the 'yourcompany' part of www.yourcompany.com. or www.yourcompany.net. You pay a fee per year to register your domain. This is the address for your future website. Registering this address is the first step to take when formulating your plans to move your ideas to the web. What is a Domain Name?A domain name is an addressing construct used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet. Domain names provide a system of easy-to-remember Internet addresses, which can be translated by the Domain Name System (DNS) into the numeric addresses (Internet Protocol (IP) numbers) used by the network. A domain name is hierarchical and often conveys information about the type of entity using the domain name. A domain name is simply a label that represents a domain, which is a subset of the total domain name space. Domain names at the same level of the hierarchy must be unique. Thus, for example, there can be only one .COM at the top-level of the hierarchy, and only one networksolutions.com at the next level of the hierarchy. What is DNS?(Domain Name Server) – Used to map names to IP addresses and vice versa. Domain Name Servers maintain central lists of domain name/IP addresses and map the domain names in your Internet requests to other servers on the Internet until the specified web site is found. What is an IP address? Also referred to as Internet protocol address. A unique number that identifies a networked system so that it may communicate via Internet protocols. IP addresses are logically divided into two parts: the network (similar to a telephone area code), and the system on the network (similar to a phone number). An IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol to route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32 bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. Most often, each part of the IP address is a number between 0 and 225; however, the first number must be less than 224 and the last number cannot be 0. For example, 1.160.10.240 could be an IP address. Within an isolated network, you can assign IP addresses at random as long as each one is unique. However, connecting a private network to the Internet requires using registered IP addresses (called Internet addresses) to avoid duplicates. What is ICANN?Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN is the new non-profit corporation that is assuming responsibility from the U.S. Government for coordinating certain Internet technical functions, including the management of Internet domain name system. More information about ICANN can be found at their web site, which is posted at: http://www.icann.org.
